Start with safety and the next 10 decisions (right now)

Water damage is stressful. But you can lower the risk by acting in the right order. DrySpan is not a restoration contractor or government agency—we help you match with local pros and understand the process.

1. If there’s any life-safety risk, call your local emergency number first (for example: electrical hazards, sewage backflow, or unsafe ceilings).

2. Stop the water source if you can do it safely (shut off the main water valve, or stop the leak). If you can’t, wait for a qualified pro or the utility.

3. Don’t enter standing water if you suspect electricity is involved. When in doubt, keep people away and call for help.

4. If the water may be sewage or flood water, treat it as contaminated. Avoid skin contact and avoid spreading water to clean areas.

5. If it’s safe, remove small items off the floor (papers, clothing, rugs). Don’t move soaked drywall or heavy materials yourself.

6. Ventilate if you can do so safely (open windows if the weather and security allow). This does not replace drying equipment.

7. Take simple photos or notes of what happened (where the water is, how far it spread, and what materials are affected). This often helps when speaking with your insurance.

8. Contact a local water-damage restoration pro as soon as possible. Water spreads into walls within hours, so “later” can cost more.

9. If you’re also dealing with mold concerns, remember that drying first is the priority. Mold prevention often begins during drying, not after.
